The Big Sale

Posted on

In every civilization, a society must move forward to stay ahead and ensure its everlasting existence. However, it is saddening to believe that in today’s society, poverty is but a penumbra.

Think of the poor starving children that laid restless upon the fields in despair… Let along a helping hand one whose soul is as kind as kings upon their coronation day. And so it took place on the 11th of October 2014, Tuesday the ardent students of 9T (Ms. Nafisah’s form class) and 10S (Ms. Thamarai’s form class) organized a joined big sale event to raise funds for an orphanage…

The charity event took place during our lunch from 12:40 to 1:20 where we sold our scrumptious snacks and delicacies. Yummy kebab’s stuffed with juicy meat, cupcakes filling icing, crispy chocolate cookies, and tarts, fresh cream puffs and cheesecakes were spread across the large surface of the table, students and staff began rushing hither and thither towards our booth wondering what delicious snacks lay before them. With benign attention, we were truly successful in attaining cash from the lunch snacks sold. At the end of the day we made a grand total of RM 220. Though it was a tiring day, contentment was filled to its peak. In plain words, we felt a sense of great delight being able to help those in need.

In retrospect, I think that our success was soul-ly base on hard work and determination that our teachers have put together. I fervently hope that such events with such benign intentions be held once more for the greater good since we all live in the same society we should care and ponder for those who seeks help. Let this event remind us of the deeds we offer to others as a gesture of gratitude for being able to live sumptuously while others are not as lucky.

Kiss The Fish Charity Challenge!

Posted on Updated on

My sister, Stefany Soh and I are currently in the 1% Club CCA, which is a charity CCA. We decided to do something for the Cerebral Palsy Children’s Centre in Penang. After debating and discussing for days, we finally decided to hold a series of joke challenges in school for a few weeks, the first of which being the Kiss the Fish challenge.

In this challenge, the top 5 nominees have to kiss a real, cleaned fish! Ours was George, the Red Snapper.

Students and teachers from both STSS and TISS were encouraged to nominate anyone in school during break times (student or staff) to take the challenge. To nominate, donations of any amount are required. The top 5 nominees with the largest amount of money collected for them to do the challenge have to either do it, or pay the exact amount collected for them.

For this week’s challenge, after days of nominating and donating, our top 5 were Hounnesh from Year 9, Wei Vian from Year 9, Miss Christine, Dickson from Year 10 and Ian from Year 10. The challenge took place in the atrium, during lunchtime on Friday.

The following weeks’ challenges have yet to be confirmed. Regardless of the type of challenge, we hope that people will continue to give their encouragement and support for this program!

UN day 2013

Posted on Updated on

As I am a new student this year, I have never celebrated “UN Day” before. Just days before the event, all the tutor groups had been doing their best to prepare for UN Day. This was easier said than done, for each tutor group had to complete a door display, a “talking heads” video and a brief presentation to be shown during the assembly.

On UN Day itself, I arrived in school bright and early. As I walked through the corridors, I gazed in awe at the dazzling, creative and meaningful door designs, each unique in their own way. Some students were still adding the finishing touches onto their displays, not wasting a second before the door displays were judged.UNDay1

About half an hour later, we lined up, and down to the atrium we went! We students chatted and laughed among ourselves while we waited for the assembly to start. Only the Key Stage 3 students (Years 7, 8 &9) were gathered there, while the Key Stage 4 & 5 students assembled at the library. I observed the breathtakingly magnificent and elaborate costumes worn by sporting student s. They were vibrant and lively, ranging from cowboy hats to shower caps! Some even stuck miniature flags on their faces! The teachers were equally outstanding, with some wearing beautiful traditional costumes.

Fortunately, we did not have to wait long. Mrs Carolyn took the microphone, and the assembly began! First, the student representatives from all the respective Year 7, 8 and 9 classes took centre stage, to present their videos and performances! There were laughs, smiles and thunderous applause from the delighted audience.

After all the performances had ended, Mr Alan gave a short speech on his opinions and experiences working under the United Nations programme. The assembly ended with a video presentation from him.

At lunchtime, the atrium was the busiest I’ve ever seen it, with students milling about, buying, selling, eating and advertising. I was involved in this event too, and my job was to sell chocolate muffins. To my delight, they sold like, uh, hotcakes. 😉

UNDay2Food, glorious food! There were ample choices, including pasta, drinks, and sandwiches and so on. I’m sure we all ate till our stomachs nearly burst! Finally, it was time to pack away and return to our lessons.

But, despite the fun events of the day, I’m sure we all remember that the objective of UN Day is not for celebrations, but also to remember that there really are millions suffering out there. Let’s always be aware of our global situation, and always do anything in our power to help the unfortunate!
